Ronin IQT Progress

Post by Derk » Thu Apr 15, 2021 5:41 am

Cadet/IP: Ronin / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-1
Check Ride Date: 14 April 2021
Score: Pass

Debrief: Please help me welcome “Ronin” to IQT. Only days ago Ronin wandered by and hit the SOP’s and training docs hard which showed in our flight tonight. Along with some past experience in BMS our flight went pretty smooth, and he showed a good understanding of our procedures, communications, and his own flight ability. We completed the Formation and Tac Turn objectives before running the fuel level low enough to grab some on the tanker. Once at the boom the refuel was quick and we were soon running some faster paced maneuvers which Ronin kept up with well. His demonstration of the IQT-1 objectives, solid communications, piloting skills, and some mock BVR runs at friendly targets shows he’s ready for IQT-2.

Nice solid IQT start Ronin!

I can’t help it, when I look at the cross turn TacView I see......stuff. I’m pretty sure I’d fail a ink blot test.

Cadet/IP: Ronin / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-2
Check Ride Date: 22 April 2021
Score: Pass

Debrief: Tonight Ronin completed the objectives for IQT-2 with successful BVR engagements on three separate groups. His first tasking was a TWS shot at two bombers which destroyed one and turned the other back trailing a line of black smoke. Quickly rejoining we turned in hot toward MiG-23’s coming in very fast. With one dropping from radar, Ronin shot on the single contact as I pulled off a bit and turned in later to finish the second, now 5 nm in trail. With the Grand Slam on the 23’s we set up a CAP and waited for the MiG-29’s to approach. They seemed to linger, so we pressed the CAP in deeper, allowing Ronin to get a shot on the lead as I turned in and cleaned up his wingman. We chased a phantom hostile from an AWAC call for a bit, but Radar was clean so we broke off for AAR. (ACMI showed nothing). After a short AAR we split to opposite ends of the practice range and shot AIM-120’s at each other to practice missile evasion tactics – Twice! We wrapped our little peaceful walk-in-the-park with a trail formation approach into Kunsan!

Looking good on BVR engagements Ronin!

Cadet/IP: Ronin / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-3
Check Ride Date: 22 April 2021
Score: Pass

Debrief: Today Ronin completed the objectives for IQT-3. We started with a practice session a few days ago in the dogfighting arena to work on basic ACM and comms. Ronin picked this up quick and soon racked up a handful of kills from AIM-9’s and gun shots.

Today’s flight he had two fast kills in the first two engagements with pretty much zero help from the IP. Ronin lead us to the tanker to rejoin in trail to give him a little experience there, and we grabbed a quick load of fuel. On the next engagement we planned to push to the merge, but the MiG-23 launched a long range radar missile head-on that was literally impossible to run from. We should have shot our 9X’s at him from long range, but unaware of the radar missiles the IP made a bad call to push in to merge. But by then Ronin had proven his skill in the 'Within Visual Range' engagement environment. We also made a TRP approach into Yechon to wrap up the afternoon.

Nice work completing the air-to-air IQT flights! Now on to more familiar territory for Ronin - air-to-surface operations.

Nice hit off my nose in the dogfighting arena

Cadet/IP: Ronin / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-4
Check Ride Date: 05 May 2021
Score: Pass

Debrief: Last night Ronin completed the objectives for IQT-4. We were joined by Blade and Bull in the 3 and 4 seat for a fun, full pattern at KOTAR. After mission planning and target assignments made at pre-flight briefing, we were soon fence in and ready for air to surface strike operations. Ronin ran in to the runway target at 500 AGL to release BLU-107 Durandal bombs on his assigned spots.

After a short climb out and spotting a line of tanks, he was in with a ripple 3 of cluster bombs, hitting two groups. After grabbing some fuel on the tanker, we headed to KOTAR and ran through the 30 and 20 degree dive bomb profiles, as well as a couple strafing runs at the range targets. Ronin showed good understanding of the pattern, comms, and dive bomb profile for his first time at the range with a full flight. We wrapped up with a couple runs at the TRP approach which Ronin showed good understanding on how to perform, and adjusting when necessary to keep up with the leads changes and adjustments.

Very nice start in the ground strike IQT's Ronin!

Cadet/IP: Ronin / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-5
Check Ride Date: 08 May 2021
Score: Pass

Debrief: Last night Ronin completed the objectives for IQT-5 under the darkness of a BMS sky. We were joined by Zeus who lead our first strike with Ronin against an SA-2, setting up a timed approach using ‘Hunter’ and ‘Killer’ tactics. With Ronin’s PB mode HARM shot in the air from two minutes out, Zeus pressed into the threat ring with perfect timing to have the Fan Song light him up at 20 seconds from impact. Unfortunately, the HARM didn’t track even though it was shot at a PPT point leaving us scratching our heads. It took two more shots to finish that SAM, and Ronin was able to take out the southeastern SA-2, leaving the corridor open to the primary target – SA3 launchers.

After the refuel Zeus and I made Maverick runs to take out the Low Blow before turning Ronin loose to strike the launchers. At some point after his strike run, a trapped fuel issue that had us scratching our heads again left Ronin with a bad fuel imbalance that hampered his ILS approach, but he was able to successfully find the runway lights visually in the dark for a safe landing.

It was a nail biting, and frustrating at times, but Ronin shows his understanding in the engagements, demonstrates solid wingman abilities, and has great control over his aircraft, so we’re moving on to IQT-6!

Cadet/IP: Ronin / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-6
Check Ride Date: 12 May 2021
Score: Pass

Debrief: Please help me welcome Ronin as the newest member of the 222nd Gamblers! Last night we wrapped up IQT-6 with GPS, LGB and Lofting engagements on a mix of targets. We were joined by Ghastly and Tech to make a four-ship for a little busier air space during the buddy lasing and lofting runs. Even though the CBU’s didn’t score in the debrief screen, ACMI showed hits on target, as were his GBU and LGB releases. We debriefed a couple profile items to help keep his runs safer, and know he's looking forward to working on those with advanced training flights.

From our first IQT flights, Ronin has shown great piloting ability in formations, quick connections to the tanker, and solid wingman support. He's able to fly effectively as a wingman in BVR and WVR engagements, and with a good understanding of weapons system and flight operations, he’s ready to participate and support our Wing combat missions.

Looking forward to flying some combat and advanced training flights with you soon Ronin!

Certainly not quick work. But lots of book time, and an awesome and patient ip certainly made the process much smoother. All thanks to Derk for all the time spent going over stuff with me and helping me refine both my knowledge and skills. I can't wait for the A courses, and a chance to learn from and fly with the rest of you guys!
