Pipewrench IQT Progress

Post by Derk » Thu Oct 31, 2019 9:17 pm

Cadet/IP: Pipewrench / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-1
Check Ride Date: 30 October 2019
Score: Pass

Debrief: Please help me welcome “Pipewrench” to IQT. Last night we finished the objectives for IQT-1 with a second flight which helped to give Pipewrench more stick time with multi-player flying and comms as these are new to him in BMS. He’s been busy solo though as there was marked improvements in all areas on the second flight, especially with rejoins, communications, SOP’s, and air refuel. Our first flight took us out of Fukuoko in Japan to bring our jets home to Kunsan, but unable to connect to the tanker left us low on fuel so we landed at Taegu. On last nights flight he not only grabbed the boom in the turn, but we also did formations and tac turns in a mock run at some hostile transports to prep for IQT-2. He shows ready.

Looking forward to the rest of IQT with Pipewrench, and maybe even some reminiscing about -60’s, T.O.’s, B-1 stands, and speed handles!

Thanks Derk. Also thanks to sniderman and blitz for joining in the second flight. Excited for the rest of IQT. Derk don’t forget about pushing those hydraulic mules all over the flight line....

Cadet/IP: Pipewrench / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-2
Check Ride Date: 9 November 2019
Score: Pass

Debrief: Last night Pipewrench and I ran through some BVR engagements to complete the objectives from an earlier IQT-2 flight. The earlier flight was smooth up to the MiG engagements as Pipewrench is picking up well on the SOP’s and comms, and had a solid TWS run against the bombers. The Grinder went well too with Blitz helping in the second element. Once the MiG showed, things got dicey as the both MiG-23’s jammed us until the last second for a quick shot at MAR. Pipewrench got a splash on one and Blitz helped finish the leaker. He also got a hit on a second run at the MiG-29 group to complete the engagement objectives. Being low on fuel we had to dip into our alternate and opted to wrap up there and planned for last nights practice as Pipewrench wanted to build more proficiency in BVR. Last night we worked on engagement formations, comms, sorting, and he even led us both into a few engagements.

Nice work with BVR, and looking to get Pipewrench in to help with our Wing flights soon!

Cadet/IP: Pipewrench / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-3
Check Ride Date: 16 November 2019
Score: Pass

Debrief: Last night Pipewrench had some fast and furious dogfight engagements to complete IQT-3. We were joined by Archer who helped out with a two element Grinder and dragging the MiG’s to us. The first engagement with the MiG-23 was struggle as it took many turns with our load full of missiles and wing bags. Pipewrench wrapped up the mext engagement with the MiG-21 quick by getting a good jump on the it shortly after the merge. The air refuel was real nice as Pipewrench connected in the turn. The last MiG-23 we tangled with was also a handful which left us low on fuel. While Archer held off the incoming MiG-29, we both dipped into an alternate using the TRP approach to wrap up the flight.

Pipewrench is looking good overall and ready to move on to the ground strike work!

Cadet/IP: Pipewrench / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-4
Check Ride Date: 23 November 2019
Score: Pass

Debrief: Another IQT complete last night with Pipewrench as we flow IQT-4 joined by Tech and Archer. All the objectives went well and his BLU-107 run looked solid along with the CBU run on the moving tank column that was made in one pass. The tanker was on very short tracks but Pipewrench chased it through the turns for most of his time on the boom. KOTAR pattern was a bit unstable as we entered it out of spacing, but after only a couple passes the pattern and cadence of calls from each pilots fell in line nicely so we wrapped up the dive bombing quickly. We wrapped up the flight with a TRP approach into Yechon.

Very nice progress with IQT Pipewrench!

Cadet/IP: Pipewrench / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-5
Check Ride Date: 3 December 2019
Score: Pass

Debrief: Tuesday night Pipewrench wrapped up IQT-5 with a nice SEAD flight along with the help of Blitz and Archer. This flight has the challenges of night flying, boresighting mavericks, and bad weather for the landing. Pipewrench did very well with 100% hits with the HARM’s and Mavericks, and kept good situation awareness. Our air refuel was quick with him getting on the boom fast after all of the engagements were complete, which only left us only to fly back for the ILS approach into Kangnung. I high approach made him wisely do a missed approach, but the second run in looked right on the mark.

Looking forward to getting Pipewrench into our Wing flights asap! One more IQT to go.
