Archer IQT Progress

Post by Zeus » Wed Jul 03, 2019 1:32 am

Cadet/IP: Archer/ Zeus
Check Ride #: IQT-1
Check Ride Date: 30 Jun 2019
Score: Pass

Debrief: Please join me welcoming Archer to the IQT program. Archer had a great IQT-1 flight departing from Kadena, executing various formations and tac turns along the way. We even hit the tanker and grabbed some gas before heading to Kunsan for the OHB. Archer has a really good handle on the jet and will be a great addition to our Wing. Welcome Archer!

Thanks Zeus, I really enjoyed that flight.

Looking at the 3rd picture, it doesn't even looks like my hands were shaking so badly xD; even though this was a "simple" no-combat sortie, it felt much more intense - and fun - than most combat casual flights I've done in the past.

Really looking forward to the next IQT!

Cadet/IP: Archer/ Zeus
Check Ride #: IQT-2
Check Ride Date: 3 Jul 2019
Score: Pass

Debrief: And it looks like we have a ringer here...Archer aced his IQT-2 flight with 100% missile hits taking out everything he shot at. Not to mention really getting the hang of tac turns, tactics, proper combat brevity and a pesky MiG-29 that just would not go down. This IQT should go quick!

Ready to go (looking at this pic can anyone tell what event has already happened?)

Debrief: Another great flight with Archer, this time taking the fight visual in some good ol' dogfights! HE did a great job getting all 3 kills with great comms and SA especially during the last engagement when the bandit was trying to drag us into an SA-10 ring. Finished off with a TRP into Yechon.

Cadet/IP: Archer/ Zeus
Check Ride #: IQT-5
Check Ride Date: 21 Jul 2019
Score: Pass

Debrief: Really ripping through these flights now - almost done. Archer had another good flight last night although not quite the outcome perfect outcome he was hoping for. SEAD work is some of the most demanding, not to mention when you do it at night so the bar is always set high for this flight. Archer made short work of bore sighting the Mav and we topped off at the tanker will minimal delays then pressed into SAM country. The first SA-2 site was a classic example of a well timed POS shot from Archer (as "killer") that impacted the Fan Song about 10 seconds after it had launched a missile at me while acting as the "hunter". While I focused on the next SA-2 to the north, Archer lined up a shot on the southern SA-2...but when it came off the rail it actually tracked to a different SA-2 site. Very odd but still a good kill. However we now had an SA-2 and SA3 site to destroy before we could get to the SA-3 launchers. Well, I killed the SA-2 with my last HARM and Archer took on the SA-3 Low Blow with his Maverick. We created mark points and passed them and once target was verified, he began his run. This is a tough shot as the Mav and the SA-3 have about the same range. Archer got it off the rail and then started arcing back out and the SA-3 launched. Unable to see the smoke trail, he did a great job of beaming the first two missiles causing them to drop lock. Unfortunately that still left him inside the engagement zone and the SA-3 site just kept firing. About 15 seconds before his Mav impacted the Low Blow, Archer was hit which put an end to the flight. Nonetheless, a great flight and given his performance on other pickup flights, Archer has clearly shown he knows his stuff - sometimes its just a tough mission.

Hunter/Killer tactics on the first SA-2. Archer coordinated the launch of his HARM at this point so that I would cross into the threat circle about 30 second before impact...

Sounds like an exciting flight! SAM's are a game changer in 4.34.

Indeed it was, but one of the most demanding flights as well.

I thought I had the theoretical part quite well for the SA-3 attack, but apparently I didn't.
I was not expecting the Handoff to only happen after I was already inside the SA-3 threat range - so I was left staring at the "Handoff in Progress" message while the miles were decreasing fast and my airspeed increasing; after launch, I felt like I was way too fast and low to perform a proper split-S without overstressing the aircraft or hitting the ground.

Was pretty interesting to see the Tacview recording after too, I had a very different mental picture at the time while unable to spot the missiles launching at me (unlike during daytime), and made some bad calls by trying to break towards the launcher twice thinking the first two missiles were still guiding.
