Festus IQT Progress

Post by Zeus » Wed May 22, 2019 10:39 pm

Cadet/IP: Festus / Zeus
Check Ride #: IQT-1
Check Ride Date: 21 May 2019
Score: Pass

Debrief: Please help me welcome Festus to our IQT program. He is a former 20th VFW member and has been waiting in the wings for a while now ready to jump back in. Last night we tested out a new IQT-1 flight that I think new cadets will enjoy. We did encounter some IVC issues but Festus is working those out. Nonetheless, we managed to make our flight from Japan to Kunsan Korea squeezing in some formation work and intro to tac turns as well as basic SOP familiarization. Festus did a nice job despite the IVC troubles so I'm looking forward to our next flight.

Cadet/IP: Festus / Zeus
Check Ride #: IQT-2
Check Ride Date: 29 May 2019
Score: Pass

Debrief: Festus and I went up for another flight last night this time trying out a new BVR mission; these new bandits are slippery little devils. Festus did a great job scoring 4 hits out of his 5 launched slammers. We grabbed some gas and then recovered at Kunsan since his IP didn't have any missiles left to do missile evasion practice. We'll get to that on another flight.

B]Cadet/IP: Festus / Zeus[/B]
Check Ride #: IQT-3
Check Ride Date: 9 June 2019
Score: Pass

Debrief: It was finally dogfighting day for Festus and I after working through some strange IVC weirdness the last couple flights (probable cause is anti-virus settings). Anyway, we decided to test out a new version of our IQT-3 mission built from scratch and stepping up the difficulty level (made even more difficult when you IP forgets to document some of those changes - more to come). We departed Kunsan and headed for the BARCAP area where we had our first two MiG encounters. The first one set up a quick turning fight with myself and ended with the MiG driving it in to the sea. The second one was a nicely executed bracket by Festus that resulted in a quick kill for him. We then tanked and headed to the second BARCAP area (the one I hadn't finished documenting). It wasn't long before our first customer showed up; a -23 on an intercept course for the tanker. As lead went for the merge to set up Festus for the quick kill again, Festus called out "missile in the air" but I was too slow. Yep, I had failed to remove the all-aspect missiles from this guy and he tagged me on the merge. But Festus avenged me and now moves on to IQT-4. Nice work Festus!

Cadet/IP: Festus / Zeus
Check Ride #: IQT-4
Check Ride Date: 12 Jun 2019
Score: Pass

Debrief: Finally had a chance to start working on AG tactics and weapon delivery. Festus did a fair job and learned a couple of things along the way. For his first run out on the range he did okay - nothing a little extra practice wouldn't cure but then that's true for most of us. He even put up with a new version of the TE that seemed to have some funky things going on with the tanker and the weather. We attempted a TRP back into Yechon however Festus had a flameout but managed to put it on the runway. Close enough - on to IQT-5.

Nice cluster bomb delivery...multiple groups of burning vehicles.

Cadet/IP: Festus / Zeus
Check Ride #: IQT-5
Check Ride Date: 26 Jun 2019
Score: Pass

Debrief: It was a long night flight but Festus managed to complete yet another IQT flight - one more to go! For this flight, Festus was quick with the bore sighting and great with the HARMS in both POS and FAD modes. He even tagged the SA-3 Low Blow with a AGM-65D and then passed me a mark point for my target. His only struggle was with a tanker pilot that flew 5nm legs and then turned...over and over again! Festus still got enough fuel onboard to complete the mission which ended in Kangnung with a nice ILS approach.
