Operation: Downtown

Post by Zeus » Sun Sep 25, 2022 7:48 pm

Between the recent news story about the latest North Korean missile launch and catching Flight of the Intruder on TV Sunday morning (probably more of the later than the former), I have decided it's time to go....Downtown.

Operation: Downtown
Time:20:00Z (05:00LT)

Briefing:
After the recent missile launches by North Korea, we have been tasked with taking out a medium range missile storage facility, it's command and control center, and a stockpile of SAMs. This will be a low-level pre-dawn strike deep in DPRK territory and will require all pilots to maximize their navigation (including time on target) skills. All flights MUST stick to the time table as briefed below.

To minimize UHF comms, for departure only the first flight will contact ground and tower, other flight leads just announce you are taxiing or departing on UHF - no need for BMS ground / tower calls. Communications should resume operations with Departure check-in.

Flights will begin their taxi to EOR at 19:58Z, ensuring proper sequencing on the taxiway. Call for taxi to be initiated by Falcon2 with all others following in sequence (Jaguar, Mako and Hammer).

Flights will begin 30 second interval, element rolling departures at 20:04Z; do NOT be late.

Flights should fly the caret to remain on schedule; there should be enough slack in the timing to allow for some time to be made up if needed.

Strike flights must be on the deck at STPT-5 and should remain below 700' MSL until they are west of B/E on the egress. Use the ingress time from STPT-5 to sync your barometric altimeter to your radar altimeter.

Two tankers, Texaco6 (KC-10) and Texaco2 (KC-135) will arrive on station and begin travelling south for your egress. You will have only 10-12 minutes of refueling time on the return flight; limit aircraft to quick splash (no more than 2,000 lbs) and no more than 2 minutes TOTAL time per pilot.

Area of Operation:

Weather:
Weather is fair to sunny with good visibility and is expected to remain that way over the target and Kunsan.

Threats:
MiG-29Ss are based to the north at Uiju and can be expected to scramble within minutes of our attack. Additionally, there is a squadron of MiG-21s located at Panghyon just 15nm west of our target, and while the reaction time of those aircraft and pilots is slower, they will eventually scramble.

There are SA-10 sites to the north however we will be operating just outside their range. Several SA-6 sites exist along our route including one which is the target for Falcon2.

As an alternative to "Flights will begin 30 second interval, element rolling departures at 20:04Z; do NOT be late." with the sequential rolling departures we could all line up on the runway with element departures at 15s rates, 2 elements per flight.

If we end up with a small turn out that could work too. :)

Awesome mission today from Zeus! Thanks for the efforts and to those that came out to support the flight. It had a challenge of night-time operations, but low level is always an exciting time. Good productive post-flight briefing too to discuss how to improve our efforts in these coordinate strike missions as there will hopefully be more to come!
