Bear Trap Special: Mission 1
Time:04:00Z (13:00LT)

Weather:
Weather is fair with good visibility and is expected to remain that way over the target and Japan.

Briefing:
While the 440th was deployed on training exercises with ROK and Japanese air forces, Russia decided to annex part of South Korea. Stationed at Iwakuni MCAS, the 222nd and 176th squadrons must now use their position to present a small, but hopefully distracting, second front to the CIS forces. Given our small number, it is imparative that we bring every aircraft home, every time.

Our first mission is to conduct a sweep of the area east of Tsushima in order to recon, and disrute, any CIS naval forces attempting to take the island. The package consists of an air and naval sweep.

Area of Operation:

Mission 1 Debrief

Our mission was limited to performing a quick sweep of the area due to limited number of pilots. However, we were able to confirm the location of the CIS carrier group and we definitely drew the attention of several Su-33 flights away from the Korean side of the battle. Having a second front to fight should have a positive impact on the campaign.

And great news, while we were up in the air, our ground crews managed to cobble together a single Patriot battalion that should provide us some much needed cover in case we need to run back to base.

Next up: More fighter sweeps and lots of TASMO!

Mission 2 - Debrief

Great flight today even if our results were less than spectacular. We gained valuable insight into the enemy disposition and potential tactics as well as bringing all the jets home.

Given the small number of pilots, the mission was reduced to a single TASMO flight carrying a total of 8xAGM-84s. The flight executed the attacked flawlessly with all 8 missiles being launched within seconds of each other as we hit the 50nm barrier.

When the missiles reached 28nm from the Kuznetsov, the land-based SA-10 battalion launched its own barrage that ended up taking out all but one of the inbound Harpoons.

The final Harpoon managed to close to just a mile or so and was missed by the Kuznetsov, but at the last minute, the Kirov fired an SA-8 variant that took it out.

Since we had a lot of fuel remaining and no enemy aircraft to play with, we strafed an OSA on the way home. All pilots landed back at Iwakuni and handed out the following lessons learned / tactic suggestions...

1) The enemy naval forces are well supported by ground forces on the island. Until that SA-10 battalion is destroyed, our only chance to hit the Kuznetsov will be to overwhelm the area with volume of incoming missiles.

2) Adding a second attack vector will likely increase our odds (thinking North and East attack runs)

3) replacing the wing bags with a single centerline in the KF-16Cs is a viable option for this attack distance and will allow us to double the number of Harpoons carried.

Mission 3 is in the planning stages and will be another TASMO heavy mission.

Bear Trap Special: Mission 4
Time:07:00Z (17:00LT)

Weather:
Weather is fair with good visibility and is expected to remain that way over the target and Japan.

Briefing:
With the scrubbing of the TASMO mission (Mission 3 above), Command executed a bold DEAD plan consisting of a low level strike on the SA-10 battalions located inthe vicinity of Tsushima Airport. The 3-ship strike had good results, taking out one of the battalions radars rendering it useless for now. The stike impressed the base commanders so much that a second mission has been authorized.

Area of Operation:
AOO2.jpg
AOO2.jpg (92.46 KiB) Viewed 746 times
This is a 4-ship DEAD mission, conducted at LOW LEVEL (as in 40 feet off the deck for extended periods of time) against SA-10 battalions; if you are launched on you WILL die. Being such a high risk mission, command is looking for volunteers.

Beast3 will carry 4xMk-82SEs each and is authorized to make up to two passes (looping around the island for cover to reset as well as egress). The entire ingress is to be carried out at a maximum 500' AGL until push (STPT3) after which pilots must remain NOE and no more than 60' after entering the SA-10 WEZ (STPT4). Egress should remain at 60' maximum until clear of the WEZ (even of the battalions are destroyed, the carrier task force has naval equivalent SA-10s).

Intel is hoping our NOE approach will prevent aircraft from launching until its too late. If a second pass is attempted, a clear picture must be confirmed at the start of the run.

Threats:
First and foremost, is the SA-10 battalion we are going after.

Intel also estimates numerous patrol and supply craft as well as top-line assault vessels including the Kuznetsov and her supporting ships. These vessels carry SA-10 and SA-8 class surface to air weapons.

Air threats include...
- SU-33s from the Kuznetsov
- MiG-29s and -31s from Gimhae
- Tu-95 heavy bombers from Russia

OOB
- 222nd operating from Iwakuni MCAS Japan (F-16CM-50)
- 176th operating from Iwakuni MCAS Japan (KF-16C-52)
