Pickup flight 11/4 Debrief

Post by Blade » Fri Nov 05, 2021 6:20 pm

Here is the debrief of a nice pickup flight that Lethel and I had last night.

Cobra4 – 2xShip tasked with BARCAP duty West of Kimpo.

Cobra4 departed Kunsan on time with Lethel in the lead. We headed up North to the cap box without issue. Once on station we only had to wait a minute or so before Chalice4 let us know of in-bound Migs from the North. We started picking them up at about 50nm, when we locked-up the first one, they split with the wingman pumping back North and the lead stayed heading toward use. Both aircraft also turned their jammers on compounding the problem. To added even more to the stakes the Bandit Lead toke a 27nm lofting shot with an AA-12 at Cobra41. There was a little bit of a indication he had done this, but not much. Due to jamming his crank looked more like a attempt at beaming.

Cobra42 burned through the jamming on the bandit lead and sent a Fox-3 his way before cranked right to counter the bandit leads crank(2nd) and presume missile shot(2nd). Cobra41 got a burn through on the trailing bandit and toke a shot as well then cranked right. Luckily for Cobra42 the 27nm lofted bandits AA-12 stayed locked on Cobra41 and turned just in front of him and Cobra41 was able dodge it. It's been reported that the AA-12 pulled up next to his window and asked for Grey Poupon before containing on its way. Note this missile was still doing CAS 376kts (mach1.07) at this point.

The bandit wingman survived the encounter but was quickly taken care of when Cobra4 did a separated and pump so the free element could hook back in and clean the tail of the engaged element.

A bit later a second group of Migs came down to challenge us. This group started beaming us the second we locked them up, so of course we lost them on the FCR. When they turned back in, they were in a 12nm split and turned on their jammers. We now knew where they were but could not take any shots. After a short time, we burnt through the jamming and sent Fox-3's their way. Cobra42’s was a cheap shot as it left the rails due to the contact jamming again and Cobra41 missile was defeated after some fancy flying by the Bandit.

Now dealing with 2 leakers"?", Corbra4 did a repeat of the separate and pump, with Cobra41 quickly cleared Cobra42’s tail then Cobra42 repaying the favor by clearing Cobra41’s tail.

With the picture clear and fuel running low, in my case, we headed out to find a tanker. With the picture still clear we ended up tanking twice before head back to Kunsan for the overhead-break.

This was a great flight and a successful BARCAP. Thanks, Lethel, for the invite and great job leading the flight.

Sounds like a busy flight at first - nice job working the airspace.
