Wheelman IQT Progress

Post by Derk » Tue May 26, 2020 4:22 am

Cadet/IP: Wheelman / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-1
Check Ride Date: 25 May 2020
Score: Pass

Debrief: Please help me welcome “Wheelman” to IQT with the 440th VFW. Wheelman joins us with limited MP experience, but the flight tonight showed solid piloting skills and a good handle on the IQT-1 objectives. Comms were sharp and jet handling well under control. We ran through most of the formations and tac turns before hitting the tanker. This too went very well as he was able to connect to the boom in a turn and complete without disconnect, along with making all of the SOP calls. After the tanker we spun through some faster maneuvers and wrapped up with a nice overhead break approach into Kunsan.

Nice solid start Wheelman! Looking forward to flying IQT-2 with you.

Thanks everybody! It was a memorable flight and definitely satisfied my hunger for more structured next level learning in BMS. My pulse absolutely went up in AAR - I'd been lucky in multiplayer so far and not had to hook up mid turn. Looking forward to MORE!

Cadet/IP: Wheelman / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-2
Check Ride Date: 2 June 2020
Score: Pass

Debrief: Last night Wheelman completed the objectives for IQT-2. The flight was pretty smooth overall since Wheelman keeps good formation through the tac turns and on the CAP, and has a good understanding of our SOP's already. His shots on the bombers were text book and made one a ball of flame and the other running north trailing smoke. We no sooner got joined and MiG-23’s were upon us. We both had good shots but my hostile contact turned and burned with my AIM-120 in close trail without a hit! Wheelman responded quick to my directives and turned in to finish him off once he turned back hot. We CAP’d for the MiG-29’s for a while, but gave up and headed to the tanker. After a quick AAR the 29’s were back inbound, but only as a tease as they turned cold and we chased them deep into red territory before giving up. No worry as all of the engagement profiles, comms, and situational awareness were solid with Wheelman.

Nice work Wheelman - on to the dog-fighting!

Cadet/IP: Wheelman / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-3
Check Ride Date: 9 June 2020
Score: Pass

Debrief: Tonight Wheelman completed the objectives for IQT-3 with a dominating performance in all of the WVR engagements. After the mission I sat sorting through all of the awesome pictures I took of his handy work and thought I seemed to be along more as a photographer. Well, I did lend a hand on the MiG-21 he chased to the deck close on its tail until it started the high G - slow speed game. But his fast comms had me in the right spot to support and finish it. The other two engagements with MiG-23’s and one with a MiG-29 were handled well all on his own as I easily followed in a safe supporting position helped out by his good engaged fighter call-outs. We wrapped up the flight with some close formation practice and into a smooth TRP approach into Yechon.

Nice job on the air engagement part of IQT! Looking forward to the ground strike part with you.

Cadet/IP: Wheelman / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-4
Check Ride Date: 29 June 2020
Score: Pass

Debrief: After a short summer break away, Wheelman was back at it and completed IQT-4 tonight. The overall flight was smooth and all of the objectives were completed with good proficiency. The first run to hit a runway with BLU-107 from low level resulted in good spacing. Shortly after climb out from the runway Wheelman spotted the tank column at the next objective and made one smart turn out for alignment, then a quick run in for a well-spaced release of 3 CBU’s - direct hits with all. After the short air refuel we headed for KOTAR and into the pattern. His pattern form looked well practiced, so I tightened it up to see if I could give him a challenge. No problem, he kept right with me and probably didn’t realize how fast and tight I made the pattern until after the flight when we found it was a short flight time. Nice hits on the targets at the range with the BLU-33’s also, and we wrapped up with a TRP approach into Yechon for a safe recovery.

Nice job on a smooth flight Wheelman!

Cadet/IP: Wheelman / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-5
Check Ride Date: 8 Jul 2020
Score: Pass

Debrief: Another IQT wrapped up smoothly with Wheelman as he completed the objectives for IQT-5 tonight. We were joined by Zeus and Ghastly to round out a nice full flight, and provided flexible tactics to tackle the evasive SAM’s. Wheelman’s first shot at a Fan Song appeared as a direct hit in ACMI, but since it stopped emitting it did not kill it. Same happened for me on our second SA-2 sight, but Wheelman finished that one up for me. Second element helped clear out the remaining SAM's before heading to the tanker for fuel. After a quick run there and back from the tanker we both made a quick Maverick run with two shots on a single run. Once #3 and #4 finished their target strike, we were in the ILS approach to Kangnung in no time to wrap up the flight with a smooth landing from a night time - bad weather approach.

Wheelman proves ready to wrap up IQT soon with one more to go!

Derk

Night time refuel - always a treat. Slow responding tanker had us tense for a minute.

I joined the #2 seat thinking "this is my training, I'll probably get all munitions on target, and more or less be the star of the show."
Well my first flight in a 4-ship w/ the Wing humbled me, and reminded me there's no need to rush anything and a cooperating flight is much > than any one ship.

The AAR was my favorite part - Derk and I cruised beside the unresponsive tanker just above the clouds trying to get his attention as the IPs weighed the contingency of diverting/ ground-refueling, taking off, and RTBing AGAIN in bad weather. Glad that wasn't needed. The efficient comms, thinking on their toes, and the sheer destruction that Ghastly, Derk, and Zeus visited upon the enemy air defenses was awesome.

Cadet/IP: Wheelman / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-6
Check Ride Date: 20 Jul 2020
Score: Pass

Debrief: Please help me welcome the newest member of the 222nd Gamblers – Wheelman! Tonight, we wrapped up IQT-6 with a multi-weapon ground strike. Thanks to Ghastly for all his help along the way and for joining our finale flight as Wheelman did well in all of the air to ground objectives - GPS, LGB, and Lofting. The release of GBU-38’s on the harbor targets was smooth and soon we were buddy lasing tanks for each other at the next target area. A few bobbles holding the orbit around the target be we all managed 100% hits for a good team effort. The air refuel was quick once the boom operator got to his station, and after two quick runs to loft Mk-20’s on ground units, Wheelman led us into Kunsan for a smooth approach into the overhead break and a safe recovery.

Welcome to the 222nd Wheelman and look forward to your support in our Wing flights soon
