Lefty IQT Progress

Post by Derk » Mon Aug 27, 2018 4:43 am

Cadet/IP: Lefty / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-1
Check Ride Date: 26 August 2018
Score: Pass

Debrief: Please welcome “Lefty” to IQT. Tonight we completed the objectives for IQT-1. Lefty is new to online flying in BMS, but comes with experience from other cooperative combat sims. He has a good handle on flying the jet, so all of that helped with his good communications and situational awareness in a smooth first flight. After takeoff we did need a quick detour right after the Ops Check due to an odd issue with low fuel total, but Lefty kept close by as we ran quick to the tanker for a load. After the tanker we threw in a few more formations and a large handful of tac turns that ran us right into an approach into Kunsan for the OHB. Lefty looks solid and is ready and excited to progress into IQT.

Nice job tonight and looking forward to our next flight.

Cadet/IP: Lefty / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-2
Check Ride Date: 10 November 2018
Score: Pass

Debrief: Last night Lefty completed IQT-5. This one comes after a bit of a delay since IQT-1 due to RL pulling him away. But he has continued to study the material and is energetic to get back to flying. We made a quick test flight Friday which went so well that we took him up for BVR engagements for the FNPU, and for a strike mission on the Saturday Wing flight. Seeing his abilities in those flights, he looked ready to jump back in with IQT-2 last night. Zeus joined us in the #3 seat to demonstrate some smooth close formations, a barrel role rejoin, quick-flow tanker position, and the advantage of a multi-ship grinder. Lefty demonstrated the knowledge and ability to engage hostile aircraft and evade away safely, and is committed to increasing his proficiency to smooth out those skills. Once the reflex actions of key presses and close formation control come back to him with a few more flights I'm sure IQT will be a smoother run.

Nice job Lefty! Looking forward to our next flight.

Cadet/IP: Lefty / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-3
Check Ride Date: 19 November 2018
Score: Pass

Debrief: Monday night Lefty completed IQT-3. (sorry for the late post due to an early arrival of family on an out of town visit.) Lefty is quickly picking up our SOP processes and flight operations. The flight went well overall after a few warm up DF engagements which started with a two ship CAP for the first engagement, ending quickly with a Heater from Lefty as the MiG-21 evaded me by going vertical. The MiG-23 we engaged next used his swept wings to try to out-turn us, which he did for a while. But our team tactics had the advantage as Lefty chased him to the ground allowing me to setup for an easy kill. For the third engagement Lefty led us in and handled the comms to the Merge, then immediately went Engaged Offensive. He managed to slow down the MiG21 by nipping him with a heater, causing him to stay low at the tree line at a very high AOA. This allowed me to pull in from a safe range, call off Left, and finish him off. After that we had a quick run at the tanker and finished the flight with a nice TRP approach into Choongwon.

Nice work Lefty! Time to start the A-G part of IQT.

Cadet/IP: Lefty / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-4
Check Ride Date: 29 November 2018
Score: Pass

Debrief: Last night Lefty completed IQT-4. We had a nice flight overall, and were joined by Schnidrman to help fill the pattern at KOTAR and with tower comms as I was unable to receive them for the first part of the flight. Our first strike was a low-level run on a runway with BLU-107’s with all bombs on target. Right off this strike Lefty quickly spotted up the moving tank columns and maneuvered through a few turns to get a run at them. After this we filled up at the tanker, and headed for the KOTAR range. Patter and comms were really good from everyone, so we kept well organized and finished the runs in no time. Our flight ended with a fast TRP approach into Choongwon to wrap up IQT-4.

Good work Lefty!

Cadet/IP: Lefty / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-5
Check Ride Date: 15 December 2018
Score: Pass

Debrief: Last night Lefty completed IQT-5 - a night time SEAD flight with HARM and Maverick engagements. We were were joined by Hurl who was very helpful with the SAM's. The flight was nice and smooth and well-coordinated with good comms and engagements. Lefty made quick work of the SAM’s assigned to him while I oddly missed an easy Fan Song shot that Hurl quickly finished up. The Maverick strike only took two runs with Lefty getting direct hits on his targets. After the engagements we found the tanker in the darkness and had a quick refuel for just enough gas to get us into Kangnung. The weather turned bad and we followed Lefty into a nice looking ILS approach to Rwy 26 at Kangnung. Lefty's efforts in his study and practice towards proficiency is showing well.

Nice job Lefty! Looking forward to IQT-6 soon.

Cadet/IP: Lefty / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-6
Check Ride Date: 19 December 2018
Score: Pass

Debrief: The 222nd Gamblers Squadron grows again as Lefty completed IQT tonight. Moosedog came out to join us for a nice smooth run thought the IQT-6 strike engagements. The GPS strike was well timed with all our bombs hitting within seconds of each other. The LGB strike went well overall with fast deployment of all bombs using buddy lasing, with just a couple falling short on the targets. Off to the tanker for Lefty and I as Moosedog needed a quick stop in Choongwon after running a bit too low to wait in line for the AAR. But Lefty had a very quick connect (like in 5 seconds), and we were both done fueling just as Moosedog joined back up to head on for the Lofting and Popup runs. Lefty ran both of those profiles very well from review in the ACMI, with a good lesson learned to use SMS to verify bomb release. (Wish we had a counter on the HUD like we do for MRM’s!)

Nice job completing IQT Lefty! It was nice having you as wingman already in the few wing flights. See you soon in more.
