Wheaties IQT Progress

Post by Derk » Sat Sep 10, 2022 6:19 pm

Cadet/IP: Wheaties / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-1
Check Ride Date: 9 September 2022
Score: Pass

Debrief: Debrief: Please help me welcome “Wheaties” to IQT. The IQT-1 flight last night went very smooth owning to Wheaties preparation and practice since he’s had very little MP flying in BMS. His piloting ability showed right away with a quick rejoin to Route formation on departure. After a full round of the standard tac turns which all looked real solid, we flowed up to a CAP area and did some more while performing mock engagements on some hostile transports. Wheaties was able to continue with good formations while spotting and committing on those contacts. Air refueling went very well too with a quick offload of a few thousand pounds of fuel for the return to Gunsan for the overhead break approach. After some ground maintenance for trim issues we’ll work more on the close formations, but Wheaties is clearly ready for BVR IQT when the time comes. For now, we’ll move on to ground strike operations in IQT.

Good job Wheaties! Looking forward to flying with you in our next IQT flight where we’ll do engagements with Mavericks and LGB’s.

Cadet/IP: Wheaties / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-2
Check Ride Date: 15 September 2022
Score: Pass
Debrief: Debrief: Last night Wheaties completed air interdiction operations in IQT-2. It was a full flight starting with Maverick boresighting, and right into spotting and engaging moving tanks with the Mav's, dropping GPS bombs on pre-planned weapons steer points, and capping off with buddy lasing with laser bombs. Wheaties showed his knowledge and ability well getting 100% hits on all targets, and I can't recall a single dry run. His piloting ability is solid as he made organized, safe runs into the targets. Still working on closer formations, but our busy IQT flights have left little time for that so far. No doubt with the effort Wheaties has put in so far, that will come soon.

Nice work with the precision ground strike weapons Wheaties!

Cadet/IP: Wheaties / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-3
Check Ride Date: 21 September 2022
Score: Pass

Debrief: Debrief: Wheaties has now completed the non-precision strike objectives to wrap up IQT-3. Our first objective for the flight was to clear out AAA units from a highway strip to make is safe for a planned low-level strike on the runway. Wheaties run with the CBU's from high altitude was right on the mark. He was then directed to the IP for the low-level run in with BLU-107's to strike the runway. He was quickly into position and I had to have him do a hold turn until I could make a run at one solo-AAA unit nearby. We timed it well with my hit on the AAA unit as Wheaties was calling IN. His posting above was to share a post flight solo run to demonstrate more accurate placement with CCIP since Wheaties strives for a high level of proficiency. Unfortunately, during the IQT flight, the pull OFF the target was at high G and caused a malfunction on the Mk-82 racks, so we had to postpone the KOTAR operations. We finished up the flight with a TRP approach into Yechon where Wheaties showed his piloting ability. A couple days later we wrapped up KOTAR with a quick flight where Wheaties proved his solid ability with CCIP in a dive bomb profile and gun strafing.

Practice and effort is paying off nicely for Wheaties!

Thanks for the encouragement and feedback everyone. It's been a great program, great IP, and all around amazing experience. It's wild how depth BMS has.

Enjoying IQT and really looking forward to flying wing flights before too long!

Cadet/IP: Wheaties / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-4
Check Ride Date: 27 September 2022
Score: Pass

Debrief: Debrief: Wheaties completed the objectives for IQT-4 last night to wrap up the air to surface weapons missions. This was a DEAD flight with strikes on SAM guidance and EWR units using the HARM's, along with using CBU's to destroy the SAM launchers. Wheaties gained experience in the lethality of SAM's and the importance of having a minimum abort range from the threat while also demonstrating solid ability to deploy HARM's in POS and HAD mode. With the Spoon Rest and Fan Song out of commission we were able to make successful runs at the SA-2 launchers with CBU’s from close range. Wheaties has quality piloting ability with good knowledge of weapons and communications use in our flights. He'll soon be an asset on all of our campaign AI and strike missions. We wrapped up the flight with an IMC approach as solo ships into Osan AB which proved to not be too difficult for Wheaties.

Well done finishing the ground portion of IQT! Looking forward to the air to air IQT flights with you next.

Cadet/IP: Wheaties / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-5
Check Ride Date: 2 October 2022
Score: Pass

Debrief: Debrief: Tonight Wheaties and I had fun in the Dogfighting arena completing IQT-5. I say 'fun' since he made it easy work for me as he was able to get quickly into the Control Zone position, maneuver into a WEZ and get good shots. In only a few rounds we bumped it up from MiG-21’s to 23’s, then to 29’s, getting good kills after no more than a few turns after the Merge. Wheaties BFM skill was solid from the start so adding in the Engaged Fighter calls went smooth, showing he could fight and communicate well.

Next is BVR in IQT-6 sometime this week, so we’ll be looking to have some Wingmen from the Gamblers come along and show Wheaties how we do it, as we wrap up IQT!

Cadet/IP: Wheaties / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-6
Check Ride Date: 5 October 2022
Score: Pass

Debrief: Debrief: Please help me welcome Wheaties as the newest member of the 222nd Gamblers! Tonight we wrapped up IQT with a BARCAP mission, accompanied by Zeus. We departed with a combat departure from Osan and headed for the CAP point. Soon after arriving the first contacts appeared. After the IP lost radar contact, Wheaties was directed to Go Shooter on both contact, which he did, successfully hitting one and driving the other away for an easy cleanup from another wingman. The next engagement was a pair of MiG-23’s we engaged as a two-ship, getting off good shots, but those swing-wing buggers took a couple more missiles shots before we got them down. The final engagement on a pair of MiG-29’s pressed Wheaties in solo again as the IP took a supporting trail position. His shots again turned the MiG’s defensive, allowing the IP to get in close to hit one, while Zeus chased the other, getting a splash when the MiG made a desperate turn back in hot. After a short AAR we were in on the overhead break at Osan for a successful completion of the flight, and IQT!

Enjoyed IQT with you Wheaties and look forward to your support of future Wing mission flights!
