Costa IQT Progress

Post by Derk » Fri May 27, 2022 9:07 pm

Cadet/IP: Costa / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-1
Check Ride Date: 26 May 2022
Score: Pass

Debrief: Debrief: Please help me welcome “Costa” to IQT. Last night we completed the objectives for IQT-1 with a busy flight. Our first flight a few days ago was a good intro to SOP’s, communications, and his first formal formation flying and tac-turns. Costa has studied and practiced well to prep for the second flight and it clearly showed. He has a good understanding of our SOP’s and has solid piloting abilities. Our flight included a flurry of tac-turns while I kept him busy with fuel checks and spotting items on the HSD. We hit the tanker for couple thousand pounds of fuel, then headed for Gunsan for recovery with the over-head break. We’ll continue to work on formations over the next two flights, but it won’t take long until he has it down smooth.

Good job Costa! IQT-2 in our 4.36 format will include LGB’s and GPS weapons, and I look forward to the flight with you soon.

Line up for departure.

Cadet: Costa IP: Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-2
Check Ride Date: 13 June 2022
Score: Pass

Debrief: Last night Costa completed IQT-2 after a short break from IQT-1 to grow his family by one. (Congrats again!). Our flight was pretty smooth over all as Costa is experienced with LGB’s and GPS weapons, and has picked up on the SOP’s very well. Our first engagement was two runs at a moving tank column while self lasing. Next we entered a wheel orbit around an airbase and used Buddy Lasing to take out the air defense units. Hitting Joker we ran to the tanker nearby for a full load and returned to the airbase to use GBU-31’s to strike SA-2 launchers. With columns of smoke in the air we returned to Jungwon for a straight in approach to complete the IQT flight.

Nice work Costa, with 100% hits from all eight bombs!

Hi Derk, thanks for the debrief and the nice pictures. I felt very well on this flight and also applaying the SOP more naturally.

Still have to work on on a couple of things on AAR with the turning tank and formation skills.

Anxious to join the 440th on the ongoing Double Dragon campaign.

Thanks!

Cadet: Costa IP: Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-3
Check Ride Date: 23 June 2022
Score: Pass

Debrief: Last night Costa completed IQT-3 with a busy flight demonstrating his ability to use unguided weapons in CCRP and CCPI mode. The flight started with a takeoff out of Jungwon (formerly Choongwong) with a heavy load of BLU-107’s, Mk-82 SE’s and Mk-20 cluster bombs. The Durandal's were used for a low level runway strike, followed by two separate targets for the Mk-82 SE’s also at low altitude. The visual spotting for CCIP of the second target proved to be a challenge, but after one short turn out and back in, Costa found it and got a direct hit. After our air refuel we headed for KOTAR to do a CCRP level run and some dive bombing in CCIP with the Mk-20’s. It left a nice smoking mess at the range, and Costa was kept busy as it was a lot to do in the 1.5 hour flight, but he proved good ability in all of the IQT objectives.

Nice job on the unguided weapons Costa!

Cadet: Costa IP: Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-4
Check Ride Date: 3 July 2022
Score: Pass

Debrief: Last night Costa completed the ground strike portion of IQT with a DEAD run on SA-2’s and SA-4’s. Using Hunter/Killer tactics on the SA-2, Costa engaged the site in POS – EOM mode and got a hit on the Spoon Rest since the Fan Song shut down after launch. When it came back up, it was an easy pick from the IP. We then rolled up to the SA-4, making the Long Track light up which Costa took out with his second HARM shot. Unable to get a hit on the Pat Hand from the IP’s shot, we rolled out to the tanker for a refuel, chasing him around the dark sky to get a full internal load.

With overcast skies, we had to forego the planned LGB strike and instead turned towards recovery base. It was overcast, so an IMC approach was needed to get onto the DME arc and ILS. Seems the Localizer is out of service at Gangneung so we couldn't do a full ILS, but Costa had a good understanding of how to do the approach and find the base.

Great job on the HARM strike and looking forward to the air-to-air portion of IQT next with Costa.

Cadet: Costa IP: Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-5/B]
Check Ride Date: 10 July 2022
Score: Pass

Debrief: Last night Costa and I worked in the dogfight arena for a second round to complete the objectives for IQT-5. Our first round showed Costa had really good ability to spot the hostile, keep an eye on the fight, and quickly return back to the fight if a maneuver pulled him off. We also start to work on the basic Engaged Fighter/Supporting Fighter communications for the team work part of ‘Within Visual Range’ engagements. This part of ACM was new for Costa, but having a strong DF skill to begin with helped him to pick up on making Engaged Fighter calls once he had a clear understanding.

Our second round last night refined the ACM coordination and each role within the team to include how to swapping roles and how to push in from the Supporting Fighter role to take a shot if the opportunity presented itself. By the end of the round he was able to dominate in the Engaged fighter role and quickly score kills on MiG-23’s and MiG-29’s.

Nice work bringing together your DF skill and out team tactics in WVR engagements Costa!

BMS 4.36 dogfighting is pretty real now with advances on how the AI act, but with we can still win!

Debrief: Please help me welcome Costa as the newest member of the 222nd Gamblers. Last night we wrapped up IQT in a BARCAP flight joined by Zeus and Blade. It’s been a very busy two months for Costa with learning BMS multiplayer flying, overcoming technical issues on the pc side, and busy real world family activities, but his commitment to IQT and BMS was solid and he persevered. Costa can pick up on new things quickly and has good intuitiveness which will help him to quickly develop into a strong supporting member of our community.

Last night’s flight had us depart Osan as a four-ship to hold a 30-minute CAP area. The first engagement was a MiG-21 two-ship which Costa spotted first. As I notched after reporting a ‘Drop Lock’, Costa made a Fox 3 – Two Ship shot, hitting one and turning the other away. (ACMI showed good TWS radar on both, but AIM-120B’s only tracked to one). Blade and Zeus were in to clean up that one. The next engagement was a 2-ship MiG-23 with a ‘Good Sort’, but as they crisscrossed, both our missiles tracked to only one MiG. Again, Blade and Zeus were in to clean up quickly. The final MiG-29 two ship was a solid engagement with both of us getting kills on the first shot. We had to double check that, but soon confirmed by the second element. After a short air refueling we returned to Osan for an overhead break to celebrate completion of IQT!

Great effort in IQT Costa, and I’m looking forward to the first combat flight with you as a 222nd Gambler.

Hi All, thank you very much for the warm welcome and I am very proud to be part of the wing.

The IQT program was a great experience and over the last weeks I grew a lot as a virtual pilot. Still a lot of stuff to improve, but I am certain to be on the right way and with an excellent group of pilots helping me to succeed.

Thanks Derk for your patience during the IQT program, I will be forever thankful for your continuous support and understanding also the difficulty on doing all tasks on a non-native language. We had a good time together and above all, I had a lot of fun doing these, thats the most important part.

A new path starts now with new challenges and be certain that I will make everything possible to contribute to the 440th.

Thanks!

Costa
