Hurl IQT Progress

Post by Derk » Sun Oct 21, 2018 3:20 pm

Cadet/IP: Hurl / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-1
Check Ride Date: 21 October 2018
Score: Pass

Debrief: Please welcome “Hurl” to IQT. This morning we completed the objectives for IQT-1. It was our second flight as Hurl worked with control setup issues from the previous flight. But this second flight allowed for some additional study and practice time which clearly showed in flight. Hurl comes to us with some MP experience outside of organized wing activity, but his piloting skill and MP understanding indicate he will advance well through IQT. He’s brought along his long-time friend “Raytio” to join the wing, so it will be fun working with both of these guys throughout IQT. On our flights, Hurl proved his ability to air refuel, work the comms, keep in formation, and understand the tac turn flows. In short time these will be refined well and become second nature.

Nice job Hurl! Welcome to IQT.

Thanks everyone. Derk is awesome - I don't know what his IP pay is but it needs to be at least doubled. Especially since he has to put up with Raytio too!

The IQT program is fantastic - I appreciate the work that has and does go into it.

Cadet/IP: Hurl / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-2
Check Ride Date: 28 October 2018
Score: Pass

Debrief: Tonight Hurl completed the objectives for IQT-2. The flight overall was very smooth with good comms and SOP throughout the flight. Each engagement went very well with shots from long enough range that we both could get pitbull and watch the hostiles turn and run before we got to the MAR. This allowed us to quickly turn back in hot and watch them turn into fireballs. Hurl lead us into the MiG-29 engagement and gave nice flight lead calls to get us sorted and engaged. We splashed 6 hostiles with 6 missiles. Hurl was looking good in the lead spot so I stayed on his wing as he took us to the tanker. After a few wicked turns to get joined up we grabbed some fuel for the missile evasion training, followed by a smooth trail formation into a straight in approach to Kunsan.

Nice Job Hurl! On to some fun dogfighting in IQT-3.

Cadet/IP: Hurl / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-3
Check Ride Date: 06 November 2018
Score: Pass

Debrief: A few nights ago, Hurl completed IQT-3. Sorry for the late post as a work conference took me away for the rest of the week. Our flight was smooth overall with good comms and formations, and Schnidrman hopped in at the last minute to provide us good support, and MiG ‘bait’. Hurl was able to keep his eye on the fight well, make good engaged fighter calls, and got into good control zone position after a turn or two. Although his shots didn’t land a kill while the pilot was in the jet, it definitely set me up for an easy kill, which is what the 2 v 1 team WVR is all about. But our DF arena practice before the IQT flight proved that Hurl can surely shoot down some MiG’s. He’s committed to increasing his WVR proficiency which shouldn’t take too long.

Nice work Hurl! Enjoy the pics of my perspective for the groundwork you laid out.

Cadet/IP: Hurl / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-4
Check Ride Date: 17 November 2018
Score: Pass

Debrief: Last night we completed an interesting IQT-4 with Hurl and Raytio together. These two longtime friends who joined our wing together keep things interesting with their friendly rivalry of digs on accidental ejections and takoff crashes. But once in the pit it was all business as they both performed very well in the flight. Zeus came along as element lead to assist in many areas, so that left Hurl and Raytio on the #2 and #4.

On our run to the BLU-107 strike on the runway, the two split off from the lead and made individual runs on separate halves of the runway with good hit spread. Then a short run to the moving tank column which were spotted and engaged in a just a couple turns. This left us at the tanker in short time for a fill up, and then to KOTAR for a four ship dive bomb and strafing run. Patterns flexed a bit as we adjusted for spacing, but settled in nicely with good spacing, comm calls, and hits on targets from the BDU-33’s. The short run back to Choongwon let us set up a four ship box formation that ended in a TRP approach.

Nice job to both of them on the flight!

Cadet/IP: Hurl / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-5
Check Ride Date: 06 December 2018
Score: Pass

Debrief: Tonight Hurl completed the objectives for IQT-5. Our main flight was joined by Raytio and Zeus with an extra run tonight to smooth out Maverick delivery. Hurl shares my love/hate relationship with Mavericks, but was able to show proper delivery technique and a good hit on an SA-3 launcher. The HARM engagements on the SAM sights went real well, even though we had to run in close to tease the SA-3 to light up. Night time air refuel went cautiously slow but steady, and his ILS approach into Kangnung look real good and smooth.

Ready to wrap up IQT with our next flight soon as you’re ready.

Cadet/IP: Hurl / Derk
Check Ride #: IQT-6
Check Ride Date: 13 December 2018
Score: Pass

Debrief: Please join me in welcoming Hurl to the 222nd Gamblers. Our last IQT flight started with an INS issue on start-up, but Hurl quickly sorted it out and the rest went very smooth. The GPS engagement was in and out before we knew it, and we had the buddy lasing complete in fewer than two circuits with Hurl bagging five splashes on his first LGB. He requested that we buddy laze for both bombs so he could work on his proficiency. We hope to do more in the near future as he wished to increase his proficiency. The tanker connection was well under the 90 second time at more like ‘9’ seconds. So after a quick refuel, we were off for the Loft and PopUp MK-82 runs with only one dry run needed. Hurl led us back to Kunsan for a nice Overhead Break.

It’s been a pleasure taking you through IQT and I look forward to flying with you again soon!
